LA DAMA DE NAZCA (Maria fegt die Wüste)
Two worlds collide as a young mathematician follows her intuition and escapes looming disaster and societal constraints just before the Nazi rise to power. LA DAMA DE NAZCA is a contemporary theatre play that follows the footsteps of Maria Reiche and her encounter with the Nazca culture. The Nazca lines are giant drawings in the Peruvian desert, whose magnitude can only be appreciated from the air. Instead of conforming to a role of a housewife and wife, Maria follows the call of her heart and travels to Peru. In the desert, she dedicates herself fully to her solitary passion: the investigation of the lines. But when she encounters the mummy of a Nazca priestess, she has to fulfill a great promise. The play is accompanied live by Emilio Urbay with pre-Hispanic instruments from the Nazca culture, which are exact replicas of those found in the excavations. It also features choreographies by Luz Zenaida Hualpa García. The play has won numerous grants in Germany and Peru and can be booked in German and Spanish. →Maria fegt die Wüste | La Dama de Nazca . An interactive adaptation for young audiences has been available since 2023 → Maria fegt die Wüste |La Dama de Nazca
TARUKA SUCHT DEN REGEN
When the rain stops falling in Taruka’s community, the little deer child embarks on an adventurous journey with her friend, the musician Quechcan. Will they succeed in bringing the rain back?
Inspired by the iconography of the ancient Peruvian Moche culture, this children’s play combines spoken theatre, elements of traditional dances such as Tondero and Marinera, and music played on pre-Hispanic instruments. In a playful and accessible way, we bring global themes like friendship and respect for nature to life on stage for young audiences. → Taruka sucht den Regen
MACHA! is an interdisciplinary performance using the Marinera, a traditional dance from northern Peru, which emerged in colonial times from Hispanic, indigenous, and African roots, as a starting point to reflect on migration experiences, in order to question binary gender roles and the concept of „masculinity“. It is an authentic and exceptional approach to the reality of intersectional discrimination related to migration. The performance won UDK Interflugs Kulturförderung grant for its premiere in 2021. → Making Of
